This aerial photo from WSB-TV in Atlanta shows the scene where a house exploded in White County Friday morning.
A gas leak may be to blame for an explosion that rocked a White County neighborhood and surrounding areas this morning. The explosion happened around 10:45 a.m. at a house on Rhododendron Lane off Glenns Drive in Mount Yonah Scenic Estates.

The explosion shook houses and rattled nerves in neighboring counties. It was felt as far south in Habersham as Baldwin and as far north as Lake Burton. Some reported hearing it in Stephens County, too. Social media lit up with accounts from people mystified and frightened by the loud boom.
Victoria Burton says she heard the noise on New Liberty and thought a car had crashed into her home. Another Habersham County resident says her husband was sound asleep and “came out of the bed sideways” when the explosion sounded off of Cannon Bridge Road.
White County Public Safety Director David Murphy says the gas company delivered gas to the house early Tuesday. It’s believed the explosion may have been caused by a slow gas leak.
While earlier reports indicated there was no one home at the time of the explosion, Murphy says officials are still trying to determine whether there was anyone inside the house when it exploded.
