Equipment malfunction causes power outage in Clarkesville

The power is back on in Clarkesville after an outage left over 1,000 Georgia Power customers without service on Friday.

The outage was caused by a broken insulator that tripped a breaker at one of the utility company’s sub-stations, according to Georgia Power district manager Brent Edwards.

The outage occurred around 5 p.m. Georgia Power crews  quickly worked to restore service. Most of the affected customers had their power restored in under an hour.

About 114 customers had to wait until the insulator was repaired, according to Edwards.

The northbound lane of Historic US 441 near Double Bridge Road was temporarily blocked due to the repairs.

Clarkesville Firefighters responded to an alarm at El Jinette Mexican Restaurant in relation to the outage. Officials say the restaurant’s fire alarm went off when the power went down.
