Election officials release voting schedule, sample ballots for June 9 primaries

Habersham County Election Officials are preparing for the June 9 primaries. Election Supervisor Laurel Ellison today issued an updated list of voting dates, times, and locations.

Most of the locations will be familiar to voters but there is one notable change.

Early voting the week of May 18-June 5 will be held in the Commissioner’s Conference Room on the main floor of the Habersham County Administration Building.

Ellison says the change is necessary “Due to the amount of absentee ballot applications that we are receiving and processing, requiring more workers within our office, and the fact that we will be receiving a large amount of absentee ballots back in to process.”

The state rolled its Presidential Preference Primary and General Primary voting dates into one due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Another significant change in having both elections rolled into one is that Georgians will not be able to cross parties in the primaries.

Had the Presidential Preference Primary and General Primaires been held separately, voters would have been able to cross parties if they so chose (e.g. vote Republican in one and Democrat in another).  Now, that is not an option.

Sources within the Secretary of State’s Office say the primary ballots were merged due to the constraints of having to run both primaries at once.  That may not be as big an issue now for some voters since the field of Democratic presidential contenders has been narrowed down to one – former Vice-President Joe Biden. He and Donald Trump are now the only main party candidates still in the race. [NOTE: The June 9 Democratic presidential primary ballot still includes the names of those candidates who qualified to be on the ballot but have since dropped out of the race.]

To be eligible to vote in the June 9 primaries you must be registered to vote by May 11. Early voting will begin on May 18. The primary runoff is August 11.
