In response to the Medical Center of Elberton’s temporary suspension from Georgia’s COVID-19 Vaccination Program last week, the Georgia Department of Public Health allocated 2,100 additional COVID vaccine doses to Elbert County. These additional doses will go to five vaccine providers in the county, including the Elbert County Health Department, Elbert Memorial Hospital, Ingles, Madden’s Pharmacy, and MedLink Bowman.
Effective immediately, the Elbert County Health Department will begin offering COVID-19 vaccinations daily, Monday through Friday.
“DPH and its community partners are actively planning to support expanded COVID-19 vaccination services in Elbert County,” says Northeast Health District Public Information Officer Sarah Peck. She says the district has partnered with Athens Technical College to provide supplemental nursing support for vaccine administration. Public health officials are also identifying additional ways to assist local providers and ensure residents of the county maintain “the same or greater access to COVID-19 vaccines.”
As Georgia’s federal allocation of vaccines increases, DPH will expand vaccination eligibility to more Georgians without limitations. Until that time, vaccine providers must adhere to the current vaccination phase to ensure that the state’s limited vaccine supply is going to those individuals most at risk.
Georgia is currently in Phase 1A+ of vaccine distribution, which includes healthcare workers, residents and staff of long-term care facilities, people age 65 and older, and first responders – including law enforcement and fire personnel.
