When 70-year-old school traffuc guard Lester Harris was hit by a vehicle while directing traffic outside of East Hall High School in November, five students jumped into action to save his life.

The Hall County Board of Education recognized those students, Drew Doker, Ethan Elder, Annie Fair, Caleb Frazier and Danny Smith at their Monday board meeting. The five students offered emergency aid to Harris, who suffered broken and fractured bones in his lower extremities, and steered traffic clear of Harris as they waited for help to arrive.

School Resource Officer Chris Alford tells school board members how the students selflessly came to the aid of Harris, who was struck by a vehicle while directing school traffic. (Jimmy Smith/Hall County School District)

“In an age when so many people speak negatively about our younger generation and how there is little hope for the future, I say, no, there is hope, and these students are evidence of that,” Hall County Superintendent Will Schofield said. “We thank them for their quick thinking, their leadership, and for demonstrating that all of us in this district contribute to making it the most caring place on earth.”

Harris was discharged from this hospital and continues to recover at home.

“The Hall County Sheriff’s Office echoes those sentiments and salutes each of these students,” The HCSO said in a Facebook post. “Thank you!”
