Early voting underway in HD 28 rerun election

Early voting got underway today in the rerun of Georgia’s State House District 28 Republican Primary. A judge ordered a repeat of the May 22 GOP Primary between incumbent Rep. Dan Gasaway and challenger Chris Erwin after Habersham County admitted districting errors that resulted in illegal votes being cast.

The official rerun election date is Dec. 4, the same date as the Statewide Election Runoff.

While statewide election results indicate there will be a runoff for Georgia Secretary of State and PSC 3, voters in HD 28 who choose to vote early or request absentees, may not yet vote in those races. Habersham County Election Supervisor Laurel Ellison says she has not received instructions from the state on statewide runoffs so no ballots are available.

A federal judge blocked the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office from certifying the general election results before Friday, Nov. 16 in order to allow more time for ballots to be counted in the hotly-contested governor’s race.

Only those voters who were eligible to vote in the May 22 GOP Primary and who voted Republican or Nonpartisan may vote in the HD 28 rerun, according to instructions issued by Ellison’s office (see below). House District 28 voters who vote early now will have to revisit the polls or request a second absentee ballot for statewide runoffs.

Absentee voters who are 65 or older, disabled, or military will automatically receive a ballot for the General Runoff, says Ellison.

House District 28 includes a portion of Habersham and all of Banks and Stephens counties. Since there’s no other challenger in the race, the winner of the primary will win the House seat.
