State and local fire investigators are trying to determine what caused a house to burn near downtown Cornelia on Monday.
The fire broke out around 3:33 a.m. June 6 inside a residence at 132 Circle Drive off North Main Street.
Firefighters arrived on the scene six minutes after they were dispatched says Cornelia Fire Marshal Josh Hazle. When they arrived, there was heavy fire coming from the residence. Units from Habersham County, Baldwin, and Demorest also responded to the scene.
“Personnel quickly attacked the fire from the exterior before transitioning to an interior attack. Personnel were able to contain the fire to one side of the residence but there was heavy heat and water damage throughout the structure,” says Hazle.
One person lived in the residence but was not home at the time of the fire.
Cornelia police shut down the section of Main Street nearest the house for approximately two hours as personnel worked to extinguish the flames.
The Cornelia and State Fire Marshal’s Offices are investigating the cause of the fire.
