Dump truck driver charged with DUI in backward crash on Duncan Bridge Road

A Demorest man was injured and now faces numerous charges after backing up his dump truck into traffic and wrecking on GA-384/Duncan Bridge Road.

The Georgia State Patrol says Zackariah Tegel, 30, was trapped inside the cab of the truck when it overturned.

The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday on Duncan Bridge Road between GA-365 and B.C. Grant Road. Troopers say Tegel was stopped in the eastbound lane. He then backed up improperly. He was traveling west in the eastbound lane in reverse when he struck a Honda Odyssey van that was stopped several car lengths behind him.

Brenda Burell, 65, of Baldwin was driving the van. Troopers say she was unable to back up to avoid the truck because of the traffic behind her.

The truck hit the van with its passenger side front wheel and bumper. After impact, the truck continued west and traveled off the northbound side of the roadway. It ran down an embankment and overturned.

Burrell was not injured in the crash. Habersham EMS transported Tegel to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment.

The State Patrol charged him with DUI, failure to maintain lane, improper stopping in the roadway, improper backing, and failure to exercise due care.
