A keen K9 helped narcotics agents keep a massive quantity of fentanyl off the streets of Northeast Georgia this week. During a routine open-air search, the drug dog alerted agents to a package at a Gainesville delivery hub. Inside the package, agents discovered 575 grams of the deadly drug.

The seized fentanyl tablets, estimated to be worth $172,500, were in a package concealed inside the original box, officials say. They were shipped to Oakwood from California.

Drug agents with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations Task Force are still working to identify the sender and intended recipient.

The interdiction on Thursday, October 6, is part of a routine effort by federal and local law enforcement to keep illegal drugs off the streets.

“HCSO and the HSI Task Force conduct routine checks with the cooperation of delivery businesses in the county in an attempt to intercept illegal and dangerous drugs before they make their way onto the streets of Hall and neighboring counties,” explains HCSO spokesperson B.J. Williams.

Williams says agents have located methamphetamine and marijuana during past searches, but this is the first package that has been found containing fentanyl.
