Across Northeast Georgia, deer are now more active as mating season approaches. This increases the risk of deer-related vehicle accidents. The Town County Sheriff’s Office urges drivers to remain vigilant during this time of heightened risk, typically lasting from October through December.

“Deer can be unpredictable, especially during mating season,” said a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office. “It’s essential for drivers to be aware of their surroundings and adjust their driving habits accordingly.”

Here are some key safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Stay alert: With deer more active during this time, slowing down and maintaining a greater distance from other vehicles can provide extra time to react if a deer suddenly crosses your path.
  • Watch for groups: Deer often travel in groups. If you see one deer, it’s likely that others are nearby. Stay cautious and watch for additional animals.
  • Timing matters: Deer are most active at dawn and dusk when visibility is lower. Reducing your speed during these times and using high-beam headlights can enhance visibility—just remember to switch to low beams when approaching oncoming traffic.
  • Check your vehicle: Ensure that your windshield is clean for optimal visibility and that your headlights are functioning correctly. This simple maintenance can significantly prevent accidents.
  • In case of an accident: If you do collide with a deer, pull over to the side of the road and turn on your hazard lights. Stay in your vehicle and call 911 to report the incident. It’s crucial to avoid approaching the deer, as a frightened or injured animal could pose a danger to you and itself.

Following these guidelines could help protect you, your loved ones, and the wildlife that calls Northeast Georgia home.
