Highway 17 was shut down on and off for about an hour Friday, July 26, as emergency personnel dealt with a three-car wreck between Sam Bell Road and Winding Stair Road outside Clarkesville.

The near head-on collision was reported at 11:40 a.m. and involved three vehicles spread over several hundred feet, says Habersham County Public Information Officer Rob Moore.

Initially, deputies from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office directed traffic to keep one lane flowing, but the investigation and cleanup resulted in the road being fully closed until the vehicles were removed by towing companies.
