Driver pleads guilty in preschooler’s death

The driver who struck and killed a boy in a grocery store parking lot is going to prison. A judge sentenced 37-year-old James Holcomb on Thursday to 20 years with 14 to serve in the death of Easton Cain, WRWH news reports.

Holcomb appeared before Senior Judge Richard Winegarden in White County Superior Court. He pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving, and driving with an expired license. His admission of guilt was part of a plea agreement with District Attorney Jeff Langley.

The charges against Holcomb stem from the fatal accident that occurred on January 17, 2017 outside the Ingles grocery store in Cleveland. Cain was standing at the back of a 2012 Ford Explorer when Holcomb’s Chevrolet Avalanche ran into the Explorer. The boy was pinned between the two vehicles and died as a result of his injuries.

The maximum sentence for vehicular homicide in Georgia is 15 years. Langley told reporters he was pleased with the judge’s sentence. He said he agreed to the plea deal to avoid putting the Cain family through a trial.

WRWH reports Holcomb also pleaded guilty to a 2017 possession of methamphetamine charge unrelated to the fatal accident.
