Driver killed in head-on collision in Rabun County

A two-vehicle crash on GA-15/US 441 in Rabun County killed a 78-year-old Lakemont man early Saturday. Louis Reed died as a result of injuries he sustained when a pickup truck hit his car head-on.

The accident happened around 7:41 a.m. near Clayburn Street north of Clayton, in the same area where three people were injured in a wreck just hours earlier.

The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) says Reed was traveling north on GA-15 in a 2007 Cadillac CTS. As he rounded a curve, a southbound 2002 Chevrolet S-truck crossed the center line and struck the Cadillac.

Emergency personnel had to extricate Reed from his vehicle due to the damage. They transported him to the nearby Mountain Lakes Medical Center where he died.

The truck driver, 18-year-old Dylan Kelly of Clayton, and his passenger, 20-year-old Michael Pate of Tiger, both sustained minor injuries.

TFC John Crawford from GSP Post 7 in Toccoa says the initial investigation indicates Kelly fell asleep at the wheel. Crawford and the Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) are investigating the crash.
