Driver cricitally injured in Lavonia wreck

A two-vehicle crash in Lavonia sent one driver to the hospital with critical injuries, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Troopers from Post 52 in Hartwell responded to the wreck at the intersection of Highway 17 and Myrtle Street just before noon on Friday, March 22.

According to the preliminary accident report, a Chevy Silverado traveling north on Highway 17 struck an Isuzu box truck as it turned left onto Myrtle Street. The front of the pickup struck the rear of the box truck. The Silverado then ran off the road, hit a ditch, and overturned.

The wreck critically injured the pickup truck driver, 46-year-old Jason Youngblood of Lavonia. Paramedics airlifted him to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for treatment.

Troopers suspect Youngblood’s “speed and impairment” contributed to the wreck, the report states.

The box truck driver, Jason Young, 52, and his passenger, Jason Sorrow, 47, both of Lavonia, escaped injury.

The State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
