
Dr. Ralph Benjamin “Buzz” Singer, Jr. passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the age of 79.
Born on March 21, 1945, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Dr. Singer dedicated his life to enriching the minds of students as a Professor of History at Piedmont College for an impressive 48 years. His devotion to teaching extended beyond the classroom, as he also shared his passion for athletics by coaching tennis, inspiring countless students to appreciate both academic and physical pursuits.
Dr. Singer’s academic journey began at Penn Manor High School, from which he graduated in 1963. He pursued higher education at Millersville State University, earning his bachelor’s degree before progressing through his master’s degree at the University of Delaware and ultimately achieving a PhD from the University of Georgia. This extensive educational background laid the foundation for a distinguished career that left an indelible mark on his students and colleagues alike.
Beyond his professional achievements, Buzz was deeply passionate about the outdoors. He found joy in gardening, hunting, and fishing, often taking advantage of the natural beauty surrounding him. His love for sports extended to basketball and tennis, both of which he relished not just as a player and coach, but also as a dedicated fan.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Lawrence Singer, whom he married in 1967, their son, Rafe Weston Singer, and daughter-in-law, Rebecca Eidson, and his sister, Anna Mary Singer Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Benjamin Singer, Sr. and Anna Mary Dean Singer, whose values and teachings undoubtedly shaped the man he became.
Dr. Buzz Singer’s legacy as a passionate educator, devoted husband, and loving family member will continue to resonate with all who had the privilege of knowing him. His contributions to the community and the lives he touched through his unwavering commitment to education and service will be remembered fondly by many.
