DPH adds 14-year-old girl to list of those who have died with COVID in Habersham County

More than two weeks after her death, the Georgia Department of Public Health  (DPH) this week confirmed that a 14-year-old girl from Habersham County died with COVID-19.

Lucero “Lucy” Ramirez, who had underlying medical conditions, was hospitalized with the virus in late July. She is the youngest county resident to die with COVID since the outbreak began in March.

Ramirez was a student at North Habersham Middle School. Her teachers called her “one of the brightest lights many of us have ever known.”

“Her laughter was contagious, her smile spread to everyone she met. And that was how she communicated with others, through her smile and actions,” wrote teachers Paula Kimbrell, Shelly Umbehant, and Debra Paff on a Go Fund Me page they set up to assist the Ramirez family.

Prior to middle school, Ramirez attended Fairview Elementary.

“Lucy’s favorite day of the year was when she shined as a Special Olympian,” the teachers who referred to themselves as ‘Team LuLu’ wrote. “Even with her struggles, it just made you love her all the more. Everyone that worked with her was blessed and learned what unconditional love looked like.”

The NHMS school community was “devastated and heartbroken” at the news of her death, said principal Adam Bagwell. “This student brought such joy to our school and she will be deeply missed by all.”

Lucy is survived by her parents Antonio and Maria Ramirez and her two sisters.
