Doris Jenkins Free, 87, of Demorest, Georgia, took her Heavenly flight home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 21, 2024.
Born in Clarkesville, Georgia, on November 21, 1936, she was a daughter of the late Rupert & Lucy Nicholson Jenkins. Doris was a graduate of Clarkesville High School where she enjoyed playing basketball. She retired as a nutritionist with Habersham County Schools with over 28 years of dedicated service. Along with her husband, Homer, Doris helped to keep the City of Clarkesville clean for many years. In her spare time, she enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking Sunday dinners for her family, helping others, and being an active part of the Hills Crossing Baptist Church. Doris was affectionately known as “Memaw” not only to her grandchildren but to many in the community.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, Homer Leroy Free; granddaughter Michele Tanksley Wikle; brothers Donald Jenkins and Ricky Jenkins; and brothers-in-law Miles Wilbanks and Lee Taylor.
Survivors include her children, Martha & Frankie Tanksley, Karen & Jimmy Roberts, Nancy & Rodney Tomlin, Pam & Rev. Greg Pruitt; grandchildren, Jeffrey & Shana Tanksley, Blake Wikle, Jason & Carey Anderson, Dawn & Ricky McEntire, Brandi & Jason Kimbrell, Ashley & Kevin Worley, Kasey & Neil Reems; great-grandchildren, Chandler Wikle, Anna Grace Wikle, Chesney Tanksley, Madison McEntire, Skylar & Kagun Zortega, Samuel & Allie Anderson, Aubrey Anderson, Braxton Worley, Lilly Worley, Kathryn Reems, Andie Reems, Madeline Garrison, Riley Kimbrell, Baleigh Kimbrell, & Cole Kimbrell; great-great-grandson, Charlie Little; sisters & brothers-in-law, Joyce Taylor, Willene & Ray Stewart, Linda Wilbanks, Kathy & Bobby Mitchell; brothers & sisters-in-law, Jimmy & Jimmie Jenkins, Leon & Diann Jenkins; Jeanette Jenkins, & Barbara Jenkins Grant; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, & friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Hills Crossing Baptist Church with Rev. Austin Kelley officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. & 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.
