Doris Elder Reeves

Doris Elder Reeves, age 96, of Cornelia, Georgia, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2024, at her home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Reeves was born on January 20, 1928, in Habersham County, Georgia, to the late Roy Newton and Wilma Frye Elder, and was one of eleven children. In 1946, Doris met and married Paul Reeves. Together, they worked hand in hand as business partners and proud owners of Habersham Hardware, where Doris faithfully served as the Secretary / Treasurer for 66 years. Doris was a member of the Cornelia United Methodist Church. A hardworking and dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, Doris will be remembered for her loving generosity and the selfless sacrifices she made in raising her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 72 years, Paul J. Reeves; daughter, Kathryn Reeves Mathis; and lifelong friend, Mildred W. Hardy.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and Lewis Cody, of Cornelia; Susie and Keith York, of Cornelia; and Linda and Henry DeWitt, of Athens. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Robin (Rob) Orvin, of Decatur, AL; Brentt (Heather) Cody, of Cornelia; Jake York, of Cornelia; Kelly (Morgan) Lee, of Gainesville; Katie (Matt) Dubnik of Gainesville; Austin (Kelly) York, of Savannah; Ben (Megan) DeWitt, of Baku, Azerbaijan; Betsy DeWitt, of Penland, NC; Emily (Nate) Fleckenstein, of Cumming; sixteen great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Wanda Elder; Gene Elder; James and Sandra Elder; Herman and Nancy Elder; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend its deepest gratitude for the wonderful love and care provided during her extended illness with special thanks to her current caregivers: Brenda Allen, Velvet McFalls, Ginger Zonner, Robin Armour, and Michelle Scott-Cade. We also thank Amedisys Hospice for the care and attention provided in her final days.

Graveside Services will be held at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at the Yonah Memorial Gardens with Rev. Julia Rautenburg officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at the Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel prior to the graveside service.
