Donations needed for Back to School Bash

Habersham County’s popular Back to School Bash returns soon and organizers say they still need help with donations. The Bash started three years ago as a way to help financially strapped families get their kids ready for school. Since then it’s grown into an eagerly anticipated, highly attended event.

Past success, current needs

The event is a partnership of local municipalities, churches, civic clubs and other public and private organizations and businesses in Habersham County. In its first three years, the event collected over $150,000 in donations and provided supplies and services to hundreds of students.

This year’s Back to School Bash will be held Saturday, August 1, 2015 at the Ruby C. Fulbright Aquatic Center starting at 3PM. The event is hosted by Clarkesville and Cornelia Main Street programs.

Just weeks away from the doors opening and Heather Sinyard, Cornelia Main Street Manager, says donations of all types are still needed.

“We still have school supplies that are needed to fill the backpacks for the nearly  500 registered children,” says Sinyard.  “In addition to the supplies, we are seeking other types of donations: heatlh-related donations (toothbrushes, etc), children’s activity coordinators, licensed hair stylists for free haircuts, monetary donations, volunteers- you name it.”

FREE community event

The public is invited to an afternoon of swimming, games, food, a bounce house, plus extra school supplies and prizes.  Various health screenings plus free haircuts will also be provided.

“We want to emphasize that this is a FREE event,” adds Clarkesville Main Street Manager, Mary Beth Horton. “We want these children to have a fun afternoon, and get excited about the new school year without parents feeling any financial stress.”

How you can help

Businesses, agencies, nonprofits, and churches are encouraged to participate.  For a complete listing of supplies still needed, or to donate other items, please contact Heather Sinyard at  706-778-8585 ext 280 or Mary Beth Horton; 706-754-2220. All supplies must be received by July 25th.
