Donation provides free cat spay/neuters for community

Habersham County Animal Care and Control helped financially strapped pet owners with spaying and neutering services thanks to a generous donation. The donation from shelter volunteer Rosa Allen allowed HCACC to provide 25 free vouchers for the procedures. The vouchers were given to Habersham County and Baldwin residents who could not afford to alter their cats.

In addition to free spaying and neutering, Habersham County Animal Care and Control provided free rabies vaccines for the 25 cats altered by Project CatSnip on May 28, 2022. (photo by HCACC)

HCACC Director Madi Nix calls Allen a “dedicated volunteer” and “huge animal advocate” who has donated much of her time and love to the shelter. In addition to trying to help ease the county’s pet overpopulation, Allen helps the shelter’s more ‘difficult’ dogs become socialized and accustomed to playgroups.

Project CatSnip of Georgia performed the surgeries on May 28. Their mobile unit provides offsite low-cost spay and neuter services for cats across the state.

To extend the available funding, Project CatSnip donated the pain medication and HCACC supplied rabies vaccinations for the cats.

“This event not only helped members of our community but also alleviated the burden of additional unexpected litters coming into an already overcrowded shelter,” Nix says. She adds the shelter is grateful to donors such as Allen and others in the community who are working to end pet overpopulation in Habersham.
