UPDATE Domestic incident shuts down Habersham Mills Road

Habersham Mills Road was temporarily closed to traffic early this morning due to a domestic incident.

At 4:25 this morning law enforcement responded to a report of a possible physical domestic disturbance at 449 Habersham Mills Road in Demorest.

When deputies arrived, the suspect “went back inside” and refused to talk with them, according to the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were informed that the suspect had access to weapons in the house and had threatened to use them.

The Habersham Special Response Team was notified and responded to the scene.

“Upon speaking with the victim again it was determined that it was not a domestic situation and that the suspect had not made direct treats to the victim or anyone else.” A press release from the sheriff’s office states. “The victim was escorted to her residence, which was not where the incident occurred, and deputies left the scene.”

Habersham Mills Road was temporarily closed as law enforcement worked to resolve the matter.

The road closure and heavy police presence stirred concerns in the community. Many took to the social media asking what was happening. That sparked a number of rumors that the sheriff’s office tried to get ahead of on social media.

“Just to let everyone know an incident occurred on Habersham Mills Rd involving a domestic situation the suspect would not come out but it has been resolved,” the post reads. “Posts on Facebook say the Dam had broke this is not the case.”

Habersham Mills Road was reopened by 7:15 a.m.
