Missouri man dies in apparent drowning in Lake Lanier

A Missouri man died at the hospital late Sunday morning, August 28, following his apparent drowning in Lake Lanier earlier in the day, according to Hall County Sheriff’s Investigators.

The victim is identified as Adelso Enrique Barillas, 21, of Kansas City. Sheriff’s Office Investigators have notified family members.

According to the initial investigation, Barillas had been swimming with two friends at Old Federal Campground when he began struggling, went under the water and never resurfaced. Investigators responded to the approximately 10:45 a.m. call, along with Hall County Fire Rescue’s (HCFR) Marine Rescue Team. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were also dispatched to the call.

The Marine Rescue Team recovered the victim from the water and performed lifesaving measures, according to HCFR. Fire Rescue continued lifesaving efforts while transporting Barillas to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville where he was pronounced dead.

The case remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
