Habersham County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Crawford is being credited with saving a woman’s life. It was his ability to recognize the female driver’s signs of medical distress that made all the difference, Crawford’s superiors say.

This week, the Habersham County Commission recognized Deputy Crawford with an Employee Commendation. Sheriff Joey Terrell read the commendation and thanked Crawford for his service.

According to the commendation awarded to Crawford on August 19, on July 13 he stopped a vehicle that failed to maintain its lane on several occasions. He suspected the driver could be impaired, but when he talked with the driver, he recognized signs of medical distress and called EMS, says Terrell.

Once EMS arrived and evaluated the female driver, they determined she should be transported to the hospital. When she arrived at the hospital, it was confirmed that she was in the active stages of a stroke.

“Because of Deputy Crawford’s quick attention to detail and prompt request for EMS assistance, he likely saved the life of the driver and prevented a potential crash,” Sheriff Terrell said. “I would like to commend Deputy Crawford for his actions and his continued efforts in his daily duties.”

Several Habersham County officials signed Deputy Crawford’s commendation letter with comments such as “Great Job,” “Keep up the good work,” and “Excellent work.”

“The actions displayed by Deputy Crawford are part of what makes our organization both successful and admired by others. We truly appreciate his service to this organization and the community he serves,” Sheriff Terrell added.
