Students may be out of school, but public safety doesn’t take a summer break.
Habersham County sheriff’s deputies recently trained on the Tallulah Falls School campus for several days. The private school in northeast Habersham hosted the training sessions on June 27 and 29.
Sheriff’s Lt. Matt Wurtz and two groups of deputies took part in the exercises. They used the boys’ dorm and the school’s theater to practice basic building clearance for residential and commercial buildings, which includes schools.
“The tactics don’t change,” said Wurtz. “The primary goal is to hone in on our building clearing skills. They are learning how to make quick and judicial decisions.”
Deputies ran through different scenarios for clearing, looking at each one and critiquing how they could best handle any situation.
“Not often can we walk through a school or campus or see who is supposed to be there,” said Wurtz. “We can use the building to train, and as we do, we learn the layout, we learn the people.”
President and Head of School Larry Peevy is pleased to have the opportunity to partner with those serving our local community.
“We are thankful for their service, and TFS is happy to provide them a place to train.”
