The Glorious Fourth celebration in Demorest celebrated two big events this year – America’s 242nd birthday and Habersham County’s bicentennial year. The county turns 200-years-old on December 15.
The day-long event Wednesday attracted thousands of visitors from all over Northeast Georgia.
The celebration kicked off early with a 5K sponsored by The Torch church followed by Demorest’s annual 4th of July Parade. Parade watchers lined Historic US 441/Central Avenue to view the spectacle.
Some left when the parade ended but many stayed to enjoy pony rides and live music in the park, arts & crafts and food vendors downtown and other family friendly activities.
A brief mid-afternoon rain shower in Habersham shooed some revelers away.
The day wrapped up with a live concert and fireworks at Loudermilk Field on the Piedmont College campus in Demorest.
Country music star Josh Turner performed along with opening acts Raquel Cole and The Voice finalist Zach Seabough.
The concert drew some criticism for being a ticketed event; Demorest usually doesn’t charge for its Fourth of July concerts. Mayor Rick Austin says the revenue generated will be used to help offset costs. Demorest spent significantly more on entertainment and fireworks this year to celebrate Habersham County’s bicentennial year.
