A Boil Water Advisory for the city of Demorest has been issued until further notice in the following areas: Old Cannon Bridge Road, Canyon Point Drive, Golden Valley Drive, Porter Trial Road, Maple Ridge Drive, and Cobblestone Lane. A Nixle Alert was issued early Tuesday morning, Nov. 28, at 6:44 a.m. Residents were notified of a water leak repair operation near the intersection of State Route 105 and Cobblestone Lane.

City Manager Mark Musselwhite provided details about the situation, stating that the leak was initially discovered around 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Crews immediately initiated efforts to locate the source of the leak, working late into the evening. However, due to the considerable depth of the water line, pinpointing the exact location proved challenging.

To address potential hazards resulting from freezing temperatures, Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) crews were dispatched late yesterday evening to apply de-icer in the area of SR 105 and Old Cannon Bridge Road.

Returning to the site Tuesday morning, repair crews encountered additional challenges, requiring the acquisition of a larger machine to access the leak, which is approximately 15 feet below the surface.

City Manager Musselwhite assured residents that repair efforts are underway, with the goal of restoring water service by this evening. However, he emphasized that the restoration is contingent on the repair process proceeding as planned.

Following the completion of repairs, residents along Old Cannon Bridge Road, comprising of 35 homes, will be placed under a boil water advisory as a precautionary measure. Musselwhite outlined the affected area and stated, “Subject to everything going as planned, water services should be restored this evening, but a boil water advisory will be in effect for the affected homes.”

Notably, the leak is located approximately a quarter mile north of Fairview Elementary School. Musselwhite clarified, “The school was never in jeopardy of being without water.”

The city urges affected residents to stay informed through official channels for updates on the ongoing repair efforts and the status of the water advisory.
