The Demorest City Council will be considering a resolution Tuesday, March 4, for redevelopment powers within the city limits.

The Georgia Redevelopment Powers Law has been in effect for 40 years. It allows local governments to redevelop blighted areas through public-private partnerships. The goal of the law is to revitalize communities. The revitalization process begins with improving infrastructure to stimulate economic activity and investment. It also addresses areas that contribute to unemployment and limit tax resources.

The redevelopment powers law grants the local government the ability to create tax allocation districts (TAD) to promote economic development. It gives them the ability to sell bonds to finance the redeveloped area within the TAD and allow those bonds to be secured and paid for by the increase in property tax revenues within the district.

The council will consider an invoice from Habersham Partnership For Growth during the meeting Tuesday evening. The invoice will provide funding to the non-profit organization to assist in economic development initiatives for the city and Habersham County.

Two grants will be considered by the council for the city to pursue. They will receive a presentation for a Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant and a Tire Grant. The presentation will explain the benefits of both grants and the process required for their application.

The Demorest City Council will hold its work session at 6 p.m. and its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Both meetings will be held in the Demorest Municipal Conference Room located at 250 Alabama Street in Demorest.
