A large pine tree fell on the backside of the station on Georgia Street and broke in half Sunday morning as Winter Storm Izzy battered Habersham County. When it came down, Demorest Police Chief Robin Krockum was inside.

“I could hear the tree as it was falling and shook the whole building,” Krockum said. “Several tree limbs came through the roof to the inside of the building.”

Krockum wasn’t injured, nor was anyone else. The police spent Sunday working from their vehicles until power was restored to the station.

A crane had to be called in to remove the tree on Sunday, and now, repairmen are working to get the building back in shape.

Krockum says the roof received the most damage when the tree fell, but there was interior damage, too. The ceiling caved in, causing ceiling tiles to shatter in the bathroom and kitchen of the station. They are dealing with water damage in the station as well.

The police are able to use other sections of the building as repairs are being made, Krockum says. At this time, they do not know the estimated time it will take for the repairs to be completed or the cost of repairs.
