The Demorest City Council voted to opt in to HB 581 after their public hearing at noon on Thursday. After closing the public hearing, Council member Donnie Bennett made the motion to opt in to HB 581. Council member Andrew Ferguson seconded the motion. The council voted unanimously.

With the city choosing to opt in, the council canceled its 6 p.m. meeting.
With Demorest opting in, the only city left in Habersham County to opt in is Cornelia, with its final public hearing scheduled next week.
