Demorest man charged with arson after investigation into vehicle ‘set on fire’

Alan Paul Heinze

A Demorest man was charged for allegedly setting fire to a 21-year-old’s truck earlier this month, according to authorities.

Alan Paul Heinze, 53, was arrested by a Habersham County Sheriff’s Office deputy last week after an ongoing investigation into a vehicle fire in Clarkesville that occurred in early October.

Officers responded to an address off Sutton Road in Clarkesville on Monday, Oct. 7 and found an older model pickup truck parked inside a garage “completely engulfed” in flames. Fire crews already were on scene extinguishing the blaze when deputies arrived.

Authorities say the truck belonged to 21-year-old Clarkesville resident Joseph Jacob McCalister, who called 911 during the incident.

Police later determined the vehicle was “set on fire intentionally,” according to a report released by Habersham County Sheriff’s Office. Heinze was arrested on Wednesday, Oct. 16 and charged with second degree arson, burglary and criminal trespass.

The case is still under investigation.
