During the July 25th Demorest City Council work session, Mayor Rick Austin and council members discussed joining the county’s Bicentennial Work Group.
December 15, 2018, will mark the 200-year anniversary of Habersham County. In consideration of the upcoming bicentennial, the county has created a work group dedicated to planning a series of year-long celebrations starting in January.
Demorest City Council heard from Bicentennial Work Group member Mike Beecham at the Tuesday evening work session.
Beecham is asking each city to appoint two people to serve on the bicentennial planning committee. Demorest is the first city he’s approached about joining. He says he’ll be visiting other cities and asking them to join in the coming weeks. In efforts to include the local community, Mayor Austin and City Manager Kristi Shead suggested nominating at least one non-elected official to join the committee.
Council is expected to vote on the committee selections within the next month.
Planning for the bicentennial celebration is reaching into all corners of the county. The Habersham County Board of Education will address their plans for the bicentennial year during a called board meeting this Friday. That meeting is scheduled for July 28th at 8 a.m. in the school administrative office on Stanford Mill Road in Clarkesville.
