Demorest honors hometown baseball legend

Demorest, GA – The City of Demorest celebrated opening night of the World Series with two presentations honoring its favorite son, Johnny Mize.

Mayor Rick Austin and city officials visited second graders at Demorest Elementary School to share the significance of opening night on the small town, home of Baseball Hall of Fame member, Johnny Mize. Austin gave each student a “Johnny Mize Fun Book” which includes a Mize biography, word search, coloring page, geography lesson and more.

City officials also greeted Mize’s daughter, Judy Mize, to unveil the city’s newest street, “Johnny Mize Drive,” in its historic hometown. The street connects the downtown into the middle of the Piedmont College campus where Mize attended and played collegiate baseball.

Mize played in five World Series as a member of the New York Yankees and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1981.

“It’s a proud day in the City of Demorest,” said Mayor Austin, “and we’re pleased to bring this public recognition to a deserving hometown hero, Johnny Mize.”
