Today is the perfect day to curl up with the book you’ve been planning to read as dangerous road conditions and rainy weather from Hurricane Delta make their way through Habersham County. Right now, there are at least 23 road closures, 20 power outages, and 164 meters out in Habersham.

Lt. Matthew Wurtz with the Habersham County Sheriff’s Department asks Habersham citizens to exercise caution if they’re out on the roads today, citing multiple reports of standing and moving water across roadways. “First of all, don’t go through [the water on the road],” Wurtz says. “It doesn’t take much for it to lift the car up and wash it wherever it’s going.”

Wurtz also urges drivers to obey caution tape and road blockades. “It’s there for a reason,” he says. “So please find an alternate way to where you need to go.”

A list of washed out and dangerous roads can be found here, while some roads are closed for outage or water maintenance, such as Double Springs Road and Central Avenue in Demorest. Wurtz asks drivers to steer clear of these roads, and if they see dangerous conditions on any roads that haven’t been listed, call the Habersham County Dispatch Center at (706) 778-3911 to report it.
