Damaged Demorest wall demolition set for May 9

After two and a half years, a date’s finally been set to demolish the damaged retaining wall on Historic Highway 441 in Demorest.

The city says state transportation department contractors will begin demolition on Tuesday, May 9.

The work will require a traffic shift away from the crumbling concrete wall. Travel lanes between Georgia Avenue and Alabama Street will be reduced to 10 feet wide. The existing turn lanes will also be shortened.

Based on the limited work area, crews will close one lane and flag traffic on days they are actively working from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., says Demorest City Manager Mark Musselwhite.

“This will allow for their dump trucks and heavy equipment to have enough space to operate safely. As things begin to progress, please be aware of your surroundings,” he cautions. “We would like to express our utmost gratitude for your patience and cooperation during this time.”

Heavy rain from the remnants of Hurricane Delta damaged the wall and sidewalk above it the weekend of October 10-11, 2020.

The wall was originally scheduled for demo starting Tuesday, May 2, but was rescheduled to avoid conflicting with graduation that week at Piedmont University.
