Cyclist critically injured in wreck in Cornelia

A Cornelia man is in critical condition after being hit by a car while riding his bike along GA 105/US 441 Saturday night in Cornelia.

43-year-old Michael Carl Burrell was traveling southbound around 11 p.m. when a Hyundai Accent driving in the same direction struck him from behind. Burrell was ejected from the bike onto the east shoulder of the road. He suffered serious external and internal injuries, according to Trooper First Class John Crawford of the Georgia State Patrol Post in Toccoa.

The driver of the car, 30-year-old Michael Steven Wylie of Baldwin, told officers he came up from the rear and didn’t see the bike.

The accident happened just past Ethicon in front of the Candle Factory in Cornelia. Crawford says Burrell was not far from home. He did not appear to be wearing a helmet or other safety equipment.

Burrell was transported by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville where he was listed in critical but stable condition early Sunday.

TFC Crawford says the accident remains under investigation. Possible charges are pending.
