Habersham County Commissioner Natalie Crawford is making a bipartisan pitch for election reform in Georgia. She’ll appear with former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams in a 30-second TV ad that will run in Georgia during the Super Bowl.
The Democrat’s voting rights group, Fair Fight Action, reserved the airtime on game day, according to the AJC. The ad features a bipartisan push for new election laws that include updated voting machines and more resources for local officials.
“We need hand-marked paper ballots, and our election officials to have the support that they need,” Crawford says in the ad.
“Every vote should be counted from every corner of the state,” Abrams says.
The Democrat, who narrowly lost to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in the November general election, then asks supporters to join them in the fight for election reform.
“Because picturing fair elections,” Abrams concludes, “is something we can all do.” She and Crawford then pose for a selfie with the hashtag #FairElectionsNow.
Timely ad
The commercial is particularly timely given the legal battle unfolding this week in Banks County Superior Court.
Senior Judge David Sweat will decide whether to grant a new election in House District 28 based on evidence presented in court of alleged voting irregularities and illegal voting in the district’s special GOP primary election on Dec. 4.
Former State Rep. Dan Gasaway lost that election by two votes to Chris Erwin.
The hearing began Monday. Closing arguments got underway Friday afternoon after four full days of testimony.
