Mt. Airy woman charged in crash with police vehicle

A Mt. Airy woman has been charged in connection with a wreck that injured a Cornelia Code Enforcement Officer on Tuesday, October 29.

The wreck happened around 4:36 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 441/GA 105 and Camp Creek Road in Cornelia.

The State Patrol says Angela Burrell was driving a 2002 Dodge Caravan south on Camp Creek. She ran a red light and struck a westbound city code enforcement truck. The impact caused the Ford F-150 to overturn, injuring the driver. He’s been  identified as Sgt. Michael Lewallen.

Lewallen was able to free himself from the wreckage. He suffered minor injuries, according to TFC Campbell. An ambulance transported Lewallen to Habersham Medical Center for treatment.

Campbell says Burrell refused medical treatment at the scene. The accident shut down the intersection for about 45 minutes as crews worked to clear the scene.
