Newlyweds from New York, in Northeast Georgia to visit the groom’s daughter, saw their celebration cut short by an accident that left both of them injured.
It happened Monday around 4 p.m. at the intersection of GA 365 South and Jess Kinney Road in Mt. Airy.
67-year old Richard Lee Phillips and his bride, 65-year old Sandra Kay Hullings-Phillips got married on her birthday, April 30th. As a gift, his daughter booked them a stay in Atlanta for their honeymoon. They were on their way there from Toccoa when, officials say, a car pulled out from the median in front of them. The crash caused the Phillips’ vehicle to flip several times.
Georgia State Trooper John Crawford says Mrs. Phillips lost three fingers on her right hand as a result of the accident. Her husband suffered minor injuries. Both were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville where he was treated and released and she underwent surgery on her hand.
“They were both belted in,” Crawford says, “but if not, it might have been a double fatality.”
The driver of the Kia Soul that pulled out in front of them, 41-year old Nobuko McClain-Adams of Clarkesville, was taken by personal vehicle to Habersham Medical Center. Crawford says she’ll be charged with failure to yield.
