A section of Main Street in Cornelia will be closed from August 27 until August 29 as Norfolk Southern upgrades the railroad crossing. According to City Manager Dee Anderson, Norfolk Southern told the city last Tuesday that the railroad crossing would be closed on Monday, August 26. However, that was later changed to Tuesday, August 27.
The road closure will impact northbound and southbound traffic, the city said in a press release.
The railroad will install a full-depth rubber crossing to smooth travel over the tracks. The city has been working with Norfolk Southern Railroad on the project for over a year.
During the closure, northbound traffic will be detoured from Main Street onto Front Street, and southbound traffic will be detoured from Main Street onto Irvin Street and Clarkesville Street. The city said the road will remain closed until the work is done.
“The city appreciates everyone’s patience as this long overdue project is completed,” says Cornelia City Manager Dee Anderson.
The project is a partnership between the city of Cornelia, Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), and Norfolk Southern, with funding provided by Cornelia and GDOT.
The deal was part of an agreement Cornelia struck with the railroad last year for the upgrade in exchange for the removal of the Hoyt Street Bridge.
