The Cornelia City Commission will have the opportunity to approve a mechanic shop ordinance and hold an annexation public hearing during their meeting Tuesday.

The mechanic shop ordinance will affect how the number of vehicles a business will be able to have parked at their facility. The number of vehicles will be based on the number of bays that the business has in place for automotive repairs.

Based on feedback from local businesses, what constituted a bay was brought into question. The ordinance was modified to clarify the meaning of a “bay”. A “bay” was originally worded to state that a bay was an enclosed 10’X20’ area devoted to automotive repairs.

The modification now states that a bay is an enclosed area with a lift devoted exclusively for automotive repairs and set aside for a single vehicle.

Annexation hearing

In order to approve the annexation of more than 28 acres of property adjacent to Elrod Street, the city will hold a public hearing during its regular meeting to receive input from citizens on the proposal.

The commission is set to move forward with the annexation of the property. The annexation was delayed due to an objection from the county due to creating an island. The developer has modified the plat to meet the requirement so that the property did not create an island.

The property will be rezoned by the city as R-2 Multi-Family District once it is annexed into the city.

Free Expression Wall

City Manager Dee Anderson is recommending that the city install a wall for local artists to paint expressive art in an effort to reduce vandalism that has occurred in the city’s public parks. The wall will be located at the skatepark. This will also give young aspiring artists a place to display their artistic talent.

The wall will be constructed of plywood and be 25 feet long and eight feet tall and sit on a 6 foot wide concrete pad.

The wall will be policed regularly and any inappropriate material would be painted over immediately.

The Cornelia City Commission will meet on Tuesday May 7 for their work session and regular meeting. The work session will begin at 5:00 p.m. and is located in the Municipal Conference Room adjacent to the Municipal Courtroom. The regular meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. and will meet in the Municipal Courtroom. Both meeting locations are at 181 Larkin Street in Cornelia.
