Cornelia removes Free Expression Wall after gang slogans reappear

City had previously painted over wall, but it was tagged again

The city of Cornelia has removed its free expression wall at the Cornelia Skate Park after someone spray-painted gang slogans on it over the Labor Day weekend.

The city had already painted over the wall once, on August 26, after police noticed someone tagged it with gang slogans. At that time, City Manager Dee Anderson said the wall would come down if it was tagged again.

Cornelia built the wall in June to allow aspiring artists to showcase their work legally without vandalizing property with graffiti.

The Cornelia City Commission discussed the matter at their monthly work session Tuesday night, September 3, and decided to permanently remove the wall, says Anderson.

News of the gang tagging elicited discussion on social media about the presence of gangs in Habersham.
