(CORNELIA, GA) – The City of Cornelia has been working with students from the Mass Communications Department at Piedmont College for four months. The project for the Advertising students was to conduct market research, discover a target audience, design a new logo for the City of Cornelia, and develop a creative brief with an integrated marketing campaign to present to the city.

Nine students from the Mass Communications Department divided themselves into three groups to develop three different ideas to present to the City of Cornelia. Mass Communications Department Chair and Advertising Professor Dale Van Cantfort said, “I usually have them do a hypothetical project that includes all the same criteria, so when Mrs. Owensby approached me about the students doing their project for a real client, I knew it would be a good opportunity and learning experience for them.”

The three teams have been working under the direction of Dr. Van Cantfort and Cornelia’s Community Development Manager Jessie Owensby. “I took that class for my undergrad, so I knew that it would be a perfect fit for what I was looking for.”

The students wrapped up their project last week and the City of Cornelia has been given all the ideas that were presented. Owensby said, “We are hoping that it will give us some insight into what residents of Cornelia want, and some good ideas to work from going forward in the revitalization efforts for the city.”

The Piedmont College Billy Dilworth Mass Communications Scholarship fund received a $4,000.00 donation in exchange for the students’ work, and each student also took home a cash donation from the City of Cornelia.
