Cornelia man arrested after police chase Friday

White County deputies took a Cornelia man into custody Friday night after they say he fled from an attempted traffic stop.

Deputies arrested 26-year-old James Hayden Ray after a deputy ended the pursuit with a PIT maneuver.

According to White County Sheriff Rick Kelley, a deputy attempted to stop Ray on suspicion of DUI around 8 p.m. on August 4. Kelley says Ray was driving a Ford Ranger and fled when the deputy tried to pull him over at the intersection of Duncan Bridge Road and Helen Highway.

“The deputy ended the pursuit by executing a PIT maneuver on the fleeing suspect’s vehicle on Highway 17 in the area of the Indian Mound [in Sautee],” Sheriff Kelley says.

Deputies arrested Ray and charged him with failure to maintain lane, following to closely, driving on a suspended license, fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer, and DUI.

Online jail records show Ray was still in jail late Monday, August 7, on a $3,500 bond.
