Cornelia Fire Marshal: No burn permits until dry weather conditions improve

If you live in Cornelia and planned to do some outdoor burning this weekend, make other plans. The Fire Marshal’s Office says his office will not issue any burn permits until the city receives enough rainfall to lower the fire danger.

Fire Lt. Josh Hazle warns residents who might try to slide by the ban that they’ll get a citation if they’re caught.

“If anyone is seen burning Saturday or any other day please contact the fire department to respond,” Hazle says in an open letter to residents.

He adds, “I have spoken with GA Forestry and they agree this is a good move to help prevent a possible catastrophic fire in a high residential area like Cornelia.”

Georgia’s drought is worsening and forestry officials are urging everyone to “follow established procedures and exercise extreme caution when using fire outside.”
