Habersham County is losing another department head. Parks and Recreation Director Kurt Cooper is resigning.

The county announced Cooper’s resignation on Monday saying he is “leaving to pursue other endeavors.”

Cooper has accepted a job in the property management profession.

“I’ve recently said that I would not leave Habersham County for another Parks and Recreation job: I’d only leave if another job outside of the profession came about and was meant to be for my family. It finally happened,” he tells Now Habersham. “I’ve loved it here in Habersham County. The people who actually took time to get to know me and welcomed me to their community, I will miss dearly – alongside the hard-working folks that work daily for the local county government. Serving the public is a difficult job, and I wish my fellow co-workers the best!”

County public information officer Carolyn Gibson says the county will soon name an interim recreation director.

“I speak for the entire county when I say, ‘Best wishes, Kurt, on your next venture.’ We will miss his humor, energy, and can-do attitude, but we are proud and excited about his future,” Gibson says.

Director Cooper is the latest in a string of recent high-profile departures from Habersham County government. Others who have resigned in the past year include former public works director Derick Canupp, county clerk Lindsey Underwood, and county manager Phil Sutton.

Cooper began working for the county in August of 2015. His last day on the job will be May 27.
