Habersham County school students returned to class Friday. Superintendent of Schools Matthew Cooper says, “We had an exceptional first day of school.”

For the twelfth year in a row, Cooper visited all fourteen schools in the county system.

“The excitement surrounding the first day of school has not changed for me. I enjoyed visiting all fourteen of our schools today. Our students were all smiling today, and staff morale seems to be running high,” he tells Now Habersham. “I have no doubts that our parents were also happy as their children returned to school today.”

First-day photos shared on Now Habersham’s Facebook page showed dozens of smiling students ready to head back to class.

For a brief time Friday, there was heightened security at Clarkesville Elementary School as law enforcement searched for a home invasion suspect two miles away. Cooper says students were never in any danger.

“The school enjoyed a productive and high-spirited first day, and students made it home safely and without incident,” he says.

“I am optimistic that we are going to have another safe school year where we accomplish our mission of ‘Success for All Students.'”
