
A convicted sex offender from Habersham County is back behind bars after being located more than 500 miles from home.Authorities say Matthew Wayne Daniel was arrested by U.S. Marshals and deputies in St. Tammanay Parish, Louisiana near New Orleans on May 2. He was being sought after failing to show up for his annual sex offender registration in Georgia.
According to records from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Daniel was convicted of second degree rape in Gaston County in 1999. He served 6.5 years in prison and first registered as a sex offender in Georgia in 2012.
Habersham County Deputy Justin Williams of the Sexual Predator Offender Tracking Unit says Daniel’s last known residence was in Demorest.
He remains in custody in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana charged with failure to register.
