Construction slated to begin this week on final stretch of Appalachian Parkway

Construction will begin on the final phase of the Appalachian Parkway this week.

Just over a mile to go. That’s all that’s left to complete the third and final phase of the Appalachian Parkway in White County.

The parkway, which allows travelers to bypass downtown Cleveland en route to Helen and other parts north, is expected to be completed this September. In the meantime, those traveling between US 129/North Main Street and SR 75/Helen Highway can expect delays.

The Georgia Department of Transportation today will begin shifting traffic onto the parkway’s new southbound lanes to allow for northbound construction. There will also be several detours set up, including around Cantrell Road which will be closed for approximately 30 days.

Access to county government buildings in the area will also be affected as work begins.

The first phase of the Appalachian Parkway opened on November 24, 2015. The second phase opened in July 2017.
