Community rallies to help widow and son of Clarkesville man killed in wreck

Justin Skelton died September 19 in a single-vehicle wreck near Hollywood, Georgia. Now, friends are reaching out to the community to help his wife and young son.

When Justin Skelton died last Thursday, he was alone in his Jeep on the road to his job. Skelton worked at Apple Mountain Golf Course in Hollywood. He was driving on Rockford Creek Road and was less than a mile from the course when his Jeep Wrangler ran off the road. The State Trooper who investigated the accident said Skelton overcorrected and the vehicle overturned.

Skelton wasn’t wearing his seatbelt; he was ejected from the vehicle and died. He was 41 years old.

Family moved because of hurricane

Skelton grew up in Habersham County. He returned home with his wife Whitney and young son last year after Hurricane Michael forced them from their home in Port St. Joe, Florida. The couple’s son Skye will turn two in November.

“Justin was a loving husband and a loving father. He loved his family and he loved the Georgia Bulldogs,” says family friend Brittney Shontz. She says Whitney is devastated by the loss. “She’s a strong person but I don’t know what she’s going to do.”

Adding to the family’s hardship is the fact that Justin did not have any life insurance. Shontz set up a Go Fund Me account to help the family Skelton left behind. “We are asking that anyone that can, please donate to help his family cover the expenses needed during this difficult time.”

As Skelton’s family struggles to cope with his sudden loss, the Habersham County community struggles with the loss of another one of its own. Skelton was the fourth county resident to die in a traffic accident in Habersham in seven days.
