Several dozen people turned out at The Torch Worship Center in Demorest Friday night to lend their prayerful support to law enforcement. The church organized the community vigil in the wake of the deadliest attack on officers since 9/11.
Five Dallas, Texas police officers were killed by a sniper during a protest in that city on Thursday. The Demorest vigil was one of many held throughout the country in their memory and in solidarity with their families and fellow officers.
The gunman in the Dallas attack, identified as 25-year-old Micah Xavier Johnson of Mesquite, Texas, was a military veteran who’d served in Afghanistan. He was killed by a bomb authorities detonated after negotiations for his surrender failed.
Torch Pastor Mike Franklin, who also serves as a chaplain for the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, led the vigil.
The vigil was streamed live on Now Habersham’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/nowhabersham/.
